How many Direct Debits do bank switching offers require?

You can switch banks without Direct Debits. Some banks require them to qualify for a switching bonus; the offer sets the number and payment conditions.

Updated 21 October 2026 · General information, not financial advice

Short answer

You do not need Direct Debits simply to switch banks. To earn a switching reward, you may need qualifying Direct Debits: the number, accepted payment types and deadlines depend on the exact offer. Some offers accept standing orders or require no Direct Debits.

Direct Debits are not a general requirement for switching banks. Some switching offers require qualifying payments to earn the reward; others do not.

It depends on the offer

There’s no single rule. Each bank decides what its switching offer needs, and the conditions change from offer to offer. The official offers checked for this guide include different requirements: Lloyds asks for three active Direct Debits, Nationwide asks for two, and first direct accepts two Direct Debits or standing orders. These are bonus conditions, not universal rules for switching accounts.

Direct Debits usually sit alongside other conditions, such as paying in a minimum amount, logging in to the app, or completing the switch within a set number of days.

They usually need to move from your old account

This is the part people most often miss. Switching offers typically ask you to transfer Direct Debits as part of a full switch. That means they need to be set up and active on the account you’re switching from, so the Current Account Switch Service can move them across.

The switch itself takes 7 working days, and payments you set up during that period won’t be transferred. So set up any Direct Debits you need well before you request the switch.

Does it matter who the Direct Debits are with?

Being a genuine Direct Debit is not enough on its own: some offers exclude subscriptions or restrict qualifying payments. Check the exact wording. If an offer needs two Direct Debits, two to the same business may not count as two.

Check verified bank-by-bank requirements before adding payments.

A quick checklist

  1. Read the offer terms and note exactly how many Direct Debits are needed, and whether standing orders count.
  2. Check your current account’s Direct Debit list in your banking app.
  3. If you’re short, set up any extra Direct Debits on your current account, allowing time for them to become active.
  4. Check whether the offer needs a payment to have been collected, not just set up.
  5. If the offer requires a full CASS switch, make sure you request one; a partial transfer may not qualify for its reward.

Always check the current terms of your bank’s offer. Each bank sets its own rules, they change often, and a switching reward is never guaranteed.
