When can you cancel the Direct Debit after switching?
If you set up a Direct Debit just for a switch, it’s tempting to cancel straight away. Here’s how to avoid cancelling too early.
Wait until your bonus has been paid, unless the offer’s terms clearly say otherwise. Some offers check that Direct Debits are active for a period after the switch, so cancelling early could cost you the reward. After that, you can cancel in your banking app or with the organisation.
Why timing matters
Switching offers usually check their conditions after the switch completes, not on the day you request it. Some check that Direct Debits were moved; others check they’re still active, or that a payment has been collected, within a set period. If you cancel before the bank has checked, you may not qualify.
How to find out how long to keep it
- Open the offer’s full terms and find the section on Direct Debits.
- Look for words like “active”, “maintain”, “within X days” or “at the time we check”.
- Note when the bonus will be paid. Terms usually give a time frame.
- If nothing is said, the safest option is to wait until the bonus arrives.
How to cancel safely
- In your banking app. Find Direct Debits, select the payment and cancel it. Menu names vary between banks.
- With the organisation. Many services let you cancel online too. For Switch Direct Debit, see our cancellation page.
- Before the next payment. A payment that’s already being processed may still be collected, so cancel a few days before the next payment date.
Keeping a small Direct Debit for an extra month or two usually costs less than losing a switching bonus. When in doubt, wait.
Always check the current terms of your bank’s offer. Each bank sets its own rules, they change often, and a switching reward is never guaranteed.
